Madrid Traditional Architecture and Urbanism International Summer School 2015

    Event Information

The Summer School is organized by the Premio Rafael Manzano and the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture, thanks to the generous support of the Richard H. Driehaus Charitable Lead Trust and the collaboration of Madrid Town Hall, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, University of Miami, Universidad de Alcalá, Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio, INTBAU Spain and Centro de Investigación de Arquitectura Tradicional (CIAT).

From June 15-21, participants will learn more about the use of traditional architecture and urbanism as a tool for contemporary projects. This inclusive workshop, which allows for various levels of skills and academic backgrounds, will address a ‘Micro-Urbanistic’ Design & Contextual Architecture challenge in the center of Madrid.

National and international participants will collaborate to exchange knowledge and experiences, thus enriching their overall education.

The studio work will be enhanced with a series of short lectures on the urban history of Madrid, architectural and construction traditions, and municipal policies for the conservation of the landscape identity of downtown Madrid.

The expected outcome of this convivial and participatory learning and international networking experience will be a variety of sketch designs presented as a catalogue of architectural solutions to upgrade several public areas in the city center.

The proposals will address key urban issues such as the preservation and enhancement of local character and the need to build communities, providing a good urban environment for their social life. On the final day of the workshop, the designs will be discussed and reviewed by the participants and organizers of the Summer School as well as by jurors of the 2015 Rafael Manzano Martos Award for Classical Architecture and Restoration of Monuments.

Enrollment in the workshop is free and open to all, but space is very limited. For more information about participating, please email: premiorafaelmanzano@gmail.com
