Call for breakout session proposals – INTBAU25

On the second day of the INTBAU World Congress (Friday 24 October), the programme will include nine breakout sessions. Three sessions will happen concurrently across different rooms at the Congress venue, and delegates will choose which session to attend subject to available space in the room.

Breakout sessions will take a form closer to a workshop, with a smaller and more intimate group that can have an active discussion that goes into detail about (an aspect of) an active project. They should be an opportunity for INTBAU’s extended network to dive deeper into a case study or an ongoing project significant in advancing INTBAU’s mission and rooted in traditional building, architecture, and urbanism. We are looking for ideas that are specific in location and forward thinking, and most importantly that address the theme Progress in Tradition.

For example, sessions can present the outcomes of a workshop series, the redevelopment of a site, a community outreach programme, the following of a lecture series or symposium, the construction around a new or old building, etc.

INTBAU chapters, grassroots grants recipients, INTBAU members, and others from the broader INTBAU network are welcome to apply. We also encourage collaborating on proposals and submitting as a small group where and when it makes sense.

Breakout sessions format

Breakout sessions are 45 minutes long.

They should include:

  • A short introduction
  • A group discussion
  • Optional interactive element

They should work towards a specific outcome or have a clear output.

They should also require ‘low maintenance’ set up and equipment as AV and any tech material will be limited.

Selection process

All submitted applications will be reviewed by the International Secretariat and the World Congress Planning Committee after the application deadline. The selection process will take place in July 2025. We expect to announce the results and selected breakout sessions in August.

Evaluation Criteria

We are hoping to gather nine breakout sessions of topics, projects, and case studies that are:

  • Based in different geographic areas
  • Fresh and relatively new to the network, and forward thinking
  • Recent, ongoing or upcoming
  • Relevant to other pressing socio, economic, and/or environmental issues

Importantly, breakout sessions should be aligned with INTBAU’s mission and vision, and should address traditional architecture, building or urbanism.
