Public Prefer ‘Traditional’ Design for Brownfield Sites

A recent poll by research group Create Streets has found that the public support more traditional housing schemes compared to more contemporary designs.

Participants in the poll were shown five types of homes which were included in the government’s new Starter Homes design exemplars. Architects included in the poll were Studio Partington with Derwenthope; dRMM; George Saumarez Smith and Adam Architecture with the scheme at Poundbury; Trewin Design Architects for a scheme in Bude, Cornwall; and PTEa’s for a housing scheme in east London.

The poll conducted by Ipsos Mori for Create Streets found 75% of people were prepared to support new homes being built on brownfield land near where they live when shown Adam Architecture’s housing in Poundbury. But just 23% backed housebuilding in their neighbourhood when shown a picture of a dRMM scheme in south London.
