Switzerland possesses a remarkably rich architectural culture. Across its cities, villages, and landscapes, one finds a long continuity between local building traditions, materials, craftsmanship, and the particular geography of each region.

From alpine settlements to historic urban centres, the built environment reflects centuries of adaptation to climate, topography, and civic life, forming a cultural landscape of exceptional diversity and character.

At the same time, many places today are undergoing rapid transformation, often accompanied by the loss of local character and spatial coherence. Questions surrounding beauty, permanence, human scale, and contextual design therefore remain central to contemporary architectural discourse.

In Switzerland, the INTBAU chapter is represented by Fundiertes Bauen Schweiz. Our organisation aims to contribute to these discussions while remaining connected to a broader international community of architects, urbanists, craftsmen, academics, and students interested in building traditions and locally grounded forms of development.

Our chapter promotes reflection on architecture and urbanism that remain attentive to place, historical continuity, local building cultures, and the everyday experience of those who inhabit these environments. Rather than advocating stylistic uniformity, we encourage a thoughtful and pluralistic approach to design grounded in context, materiality, and long-term cultural value.

Through publications, lectures, discussions, study visits, collaborations, and educational initiatives, we hope to foster exchange across disciplines and generations, both nationally and internationally. Particular attention is given to the relationship between architecture and landscape, the transmission of craftsmanship and building knowledge, and the role of beauty and civic culture in shaping enduring and humane environments.

As a country defined by strong regional identities and remarkable geographic diversity, Switzerland offers fertile ground for these reflections. Our chapter hopes to contribute to an architectural culture that remains connected to memory, place, and human experience while engaging constructively with the challenges and realities of the present.
