Mubashir Ul Islam Malik is a RIBA Chartered Architect with over twenty years of professional experience in traditional architecture and the conservation of historic buildings. He completed his architectural education and initial professional registration in 2004 in India, before practising internationally and later achieving professional registration as an architect in the United Kingdom.
Mubashir’s early career was defined by his role as Site Architect for the restoration of a 14th‑century temple complex in Ladakh, North India, undertaken with ANL Associates, Mumbai. His work on conservation detailing and on‑site restoration contributed to an internationally recognised, UNESCO award‑winning heritage project—an experience that continues to inform his conservation‑led approach and deep respect for traditional craftsmanship.
He holds an MSc in the Conservation of Historic Buildings from the University of Bath, further grounding his practice in a principled commitment to architectural continuity, material integrity, and placemaking. His research includes extensive heritage documentation of the Old City of Srinagar, India, examining its traditional urban form, vernacular architecture, and timber‑frame construction. This work has contributed to a richer understanding of regional building traditions and ongoing conservation challenges.
In the UK, Mubashir has worked with several architectural practices on award-winning Georgian and Classical buildings before joining his current practice in 2013. He has since played a vital role in the design, detailing, and delivery of large-scale residential and conservation projects, including listed buildings, country houses, barn conversions, estate properties, and sensitively designed new-build homes within historic and rural settings. His work is characterised by a thoughtful, contextually responsive approach rooted in traditional building knowledge.
Mubashir’s professional experience spans the full RIBA Plan of Work (Stages 0–7). He has acted as Project Lead, Principal Designer under CDM and the Building Safety Act, and Contract Administrator. He is recognised for his meticulous attention to detail, strong technical capability, and deep understanding of the sensitivities inherent in working with historic buildings and landscapes.
His architectural philosophy is founded on continuity, contextual responsiveness, and cultural understanding. He believes that traditional building knowledge and craft traditions are essential to the creation and stewardship of lasting, meaningful places, and he remains dedicated to promoting traditional architecture and the building arts worldwide.
