INTBAU Pakistan Grants Programme

The Heritage Foundation of Pakistan and INTBAU are pleased to announce that two grants for budgets of up to £6,000 GBP each are available for graduates of the Pakistan Climate Volunteering Programmes. These are specific to follow on projects inspired directly by Yasmeen Lari’s work and methodologies, but drawing on the architectural vernacular and ecology of the environment where graduates are based.  

Were you a participant on one of the three Pakistan climate volunteering programmes between December 2022 and January 2024? 

Are you currently researching low carbon building, vernacular and traditional architecture, or climate adaptation and mitigation methods? 

Do you have an itch to realise your ideas, apply your research, and build? 

I. Key details 

  • Two grants available for up to £6,000 GBP each.
  • Projects can start from 1 February 2025. They must be completed by 30 September 2025.
  • The application deadline is Tuesday 31 December at midnight GMT. 

II. Criteria for success 

The project should lead to a prototype build that can act as a demonstration of Yasmeen Lari’s methodologies and how they can be employed in your local context. We are seeking projects that demonstrate a clear inspiration by and understanding of the work carried out by Yasmeen Lari, notably in low carbon building, traditional and/or local construction techniques, traditional and/or local architecture, climate mitigation and adaptation methodologies, or disaster resilient design.  

We will prioritise proposals projects against the following selection criteria: 

  • Clearly inspired by the Pakistan climate volunteering programme and Yasmeen Lari’s work.
  • Reaching a wide audience.
  • Advantageous use of cost, quality and potential.
  • Reflecting INTBAU’s mission to support, advance and adapt building traditions around the world with the aim of creating better places for people to live.

III. Application Material 

1. Please complete the application form, with a few background questions and contact details.

2. Proposal, including a description of the prototype build, your project timeline, and answers to the five questions below.

3. Three or more visual refences (PDFs). These can be preliminary sketches or renderings of your prototype build, previous portfolio work, inspirational photographs and images, or other visual content.

4. Funding needed. Please send a breakdown of the estimated costs for your project noting how the grant will be spent.

5. Once you have completed the form, please send your proposal and any additional application material addressing the points above as a one PDF document to info@intbau.org, with subject line NAME – INTBAU PAKISTAN GRANT APPLICATION. 

IV. Successful proposals will address the questions below: 

1. How is your project inspired by the works done during your time on the programme at Pono village and/or by Yasmeen Lari’s methodologies? 

2. Briefly explain your choice of materials, building techniques, and design. How does your overall proposal offer a solution to built environment challenges in the local context? 

3. How is your proposal influenced by traditional, local architecture, building or urbanism?  

4. Who is your audience and how do you plan to engage the local community with your work? 

5. How will your proposal and build create a long-term impact? 

The application deadline is Tuesday 31 December 2024 midnight GMT – this means you will have submitted a completed google form from the application page and emailed your one document PDF proposal and application material to info@intbau.org.  

V. The Selection Process 

Initial applications will be reviewed by an international selection committee in January 2025. If your application is shortlisted, we will come back to you the same month for any additional questions and requests for additional materials. Final decisions will be announced in late January / early February 2025.
