Tim is a Partner and Managing Principal of Hart Howerton, a group of planners, architects, landscape architects, and interior designers headquartered in New York and San Francisco with a network across the globe. Hart Howerton’s practice is Designing Complete Environments – exceptional buildings, communities, and places – in special situations, where a unique historic or natural environment requires an especially thoughtful and innovative solution.
Work
Since 1967, Hart Howerton’s interdisciplinary approach has made its unique focus the creation of buildings and places that embody the spirit of tradition, including adherence to the values that serve human society well. “Although the term ‘classicism’ is used to describe specific, well-defined, codified ‘styles,’” Robert Lamb Hart, the firm’s founder and chairman emeritus, describes it as “a broader, refined language of humanism, one that has been eloquently spelled out – and repeatedly refreshed – in words and structures over millennia.”
Tim’s commitment to humanism – specifically, understanding how conditions in the built environment may drive health and wellness-based design – has guided his professional efforts. He continues to lead the firm’s sponsored research at the University of Virginia’s Center for Design & Health, is an Advisory Board Member at Cornell University’s Institute for Healthy Futures, was a Working Group Member for the International WELL Building Institute’s WELL “Community Standard,” and contributes to the Urban Land Institute’s Building Healthy Places Initiative as an inaugural ULI Health Leaders Network Fellow. Most recently, Tim was named to WELL’s Advisory for Hotels and Resorts, a group of industry leaders, providing insights on the application of the WELL Health-Safety Rating for Hotels & Resorts in a post COVID-19 environment.
Before joining Hart Howerton, Tim’s work included 68 Vincent Square, a 70-apartment redevelopment in London’s Westminster (with John Simpson); winning entries for design competitions at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, and Peterhouse College, Cambridge (with John Simpson); institutional work for Princeton University’s Whitman College (with Demetri Porphyrios); and convention centers & large-scale sports venues across the American Midwest.
Tim is the Immediate Past Chair of ULI’s Global Exchange Council. He has served as a guest critic at Kent State University’s architecture program in Florence, Italy; worked as a course aide at the University of Pennsylvania; was a teaching assistant in the design studios of the University of Notre Dame; and has guest lectured at the University of Virginia and the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. His work has been published & exhibited internationally.
