INTBAU Barcelona Programme: Spain, 21-28 April 2012

INTBAU Italy has announced a programme that will provide the unique opportunity to investigate the ideas that have most profoundly shaped the cities of Europe and are likely to powerfully shape the cities of the future. Barcelona offers an abundance of object lessons through its heritage of art, design and architecture which illustrate both the promise and the challenges of constructing a sustainable city for the future, embodying the richness of Spanish social life. The mission is to make that as yet “invisible” city visible by means of the visual language of drawing and representation and allowing our imaginations to be free.

22 April: The Art of Building Cities: Barri Gòtic
The starting point of any exploration of Barcelona. From human castle-building in Plaça Jaume to the history-steeped backstreets around La Seu cathedral and the laidback arty bars and cafés of its squares. From the Roman Citadel to the Gotìc Barrio, Barcelona is a picturesque place, full of street art landmarks, photogenic scenes and textures. The Almacenes del Pilar hosts a glorious array of fabrics and accessories for traditional Spanish costumes on display in a Bohemian interior (1886). For mouth-watering photographs, head to the city's most central food market and gourmand's pilgrimage La Boqueria along La Rambla, where you'll discover layers of fruit and veg, olives and herbs in full colour.

Evening walk: Els Quatre Gats, on the steps of Pablo Picasso

23 April: The contemporary Raval
Like Paris, Barcelona has a literary flavour. In this city, many writers have been inspired by the lower Raval, generally referred to as the Barrio Chino. Major contemporary key buildings are MACBA, Barcelona's Contemporary Art Museum, which is a must-visit for anyone interested in art, and which is located opposite the CCCB (Barcelona's Contemporary Cultural Centre).

24 April: The traditional Spain: Poble Espanyol
Built for the International Exhibition of 1929, Poble Espanyol is a large-scale model village celebrating architectural styles from all over Spain. Montjuic is perfect for a leafy stroll with great views; scattered across the landward side are buildings from the 1992 Olympic Games, including Santiago Calatrava's Olympic needle, the lighthouse, a vast cemetery, the Olympic stadium and the Jardi Botànic. The Pavelló de la Repubblica by Mies van der Rohe (1929) and the cultural centre Caixa Forum are both located here.

In the Dreta area of Eixample (the modern city extension designed by Ildefons Cerdà), walking along Passeig de la Gràcia, there are some masterpieces: Gaudí's Casa Batlló, built for a  textile tycoon and La Pedrera which hosts the Espai Gaudì. Nearby, you can gaze at his rivals' architecture: the shiny Casa Amatller by Puig i Cadafalch, and the decadent Casa Lleó Morera by Domènech i Muntaner. Nearby, you'll find his Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, whose city gardens offer a pleasant oasis amid the bustling city.

Gaudí's fairytale architectures: the Sagrada Familia is a breathtaking and grotesque giant where the protuberances create a stone tapestry of Christ's life. Park Güell is a magical place that emulates an English garden city. After seeing the gatehouses, based on designs for the opera Hansel and Gretel, you can walk up a splendid staircase, past a mosaic lizard to what was once a marketplace.
