INTBAU Update August 2007

First a bit of news about INTBAU: we now have more than 2,000 members in 89 countries. Thank you to all those who have referred us to friends and colleagues.

The "History, Heritage & Regeneration" conference being held from 23-25 September in Sibiu, Transylvania, Romania looks at the way Eastern Europe is turning its unique heritage into an economic asset that supports regeneration, tourism and improved quality of life. The venue is a beautiful old theatre in the city of Sibiu, one of the two European Capitals of Culture for 2007. Expect inexpensive delicious food, friendly people, lots of exhibitions and events outside the conference, and a great way of meeting INTBAU friends and others. There are flights direct to Sibiu from major European hub airports.

You are invited to support the publication by subscription of "Tradition Today: Continuity in Architecture and Society", INTBAU's first ever book. The work is a comprehensive and beautifully-illustrated survey of the many ways that tradition informs and guides modern life.

The value of this resource on traditional architecture and tradition is endorsed in a foreword by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, Patron of INTBAU. All subscriber names will be acknowledged in the book with a personal reference on the page following the Prince of Wales’s introduction, sized and positioned according to the level of contribution.

INTBAU USA Chapter Launch at the Traditional Building Exposition and Conference

Those of you in or near New Orleans can join our friends at the INTBAU USA Chapter Launch. Come along and launch the second-newest chapter of INTBAU*. Take in the Traditional Building show and learn about porches and balconies at the INTBAU workshop and launch party. Relevance and Practice of Traditional Architecture and Building in the provision of viable housing for rural communities and urban poor
November 2007, Kano - Nigeria

The "Relevance of Traditional Architecture" conference will explore the way traditional architecture is being used around the world to house rural and urban dwellers. The venue is Bayero University in the fascinating ancient city of Kano, in the north of the huge country of Nigeria, the fastest growing economy in Africa and a land of great contrasts. We are very interested in receiving proposals for papers on themes including:

  • Settlement studies and New Urbanism in Africa
  • The Architectural/Building Situation in poor rural and urban areas
  • The Nigeria Situation - The need for Regeneration

    Staff news

    INTBAU's communications director Aura Neag is in Romania running our sold-out Traditional Masonry Course.

    Nigeria chapter development officer Ruqayya Tofa is helping to promote the Relevance of Traditional Architecture conference from London.

    INTBAU India chair Deependra Prashad is in Sweden presenting a paper on water harvesting in traditional urban architecture at World Water Week conference.

    INTBAU Scandinavia Board members Audun Engh, Arne Sødal and Claus Zapffe and INTBAU USA acting Chair Michael Mehaffy visited the Traditional Masonry Summer School in Laslea, Romania.
