MASTERCLASS
This is a specially designed course for lecturers, skilled apprentices and practitioners who intend to become future trainers of heritage courses or master craftsman. The participants will learn a wide range of techniques required to work on an ancient site. The course will offer one-to-one tuition and will allow participants exclusive access to unique medieval heritage sites. The course has two weeks and can accommodate maximum 12 participants.
The course takes place over two weeks from 15 - 27 August 2010 in the medieval village of Archita, located in the province of Transylvania, Romania.
During the first week the main elements of the course include:
- Ancient and heritage sites: the fabric of the place and the relevance of the historic context in which they were created
- “Back to basics session”: traditional tools and traditional materials (lime, sand, earth mortar, porcelanic additives)
- Working with lime, bricks and stone
- Plastering techniques adapted to different sites
- Work on site: repairs of sensitive heritage sites within the citadel of the medieval church of Archita
The second week of the Masterclass is designed for working on sites of different scales: medieval structures and individual houses of heritage value. The participants will be undertaking difficult repairs to medieval towers of the fortified church of Archita and structural repairs of a vernacular cottage. The training will involve learning different techniques of restoration based on locally available materials using traditional tools.
The work of the participants will be documented by tutors and by the INTBAU staff throughout the programme. INTBAU will issue attendance certificates to all participants and recommendation letters upon request. Those who will successfully complete the Masterclass may be invited to deliver lectures to future INTBAU programmes.
Attendance fee: £1,390 which includes tuition fees, materials, tools, protection equipment, 14 nights of accommodation in a local B&B, three meals/day and local trips to UNESCO villages & sites.
