This course offers the opportunity to learn about traditional materials, tools, structure, design and the maintenance and repair of historic buildings. The participants will be able to work on 14th century sites undertaking small repairs with the supervision of tutors and INTBAU staff. There will be visits to a number of places with remarkable medieval architecture, including the villages of Viscri and Saschiz and the towns of Sibiu and Sighisoara.

The training programme includes:

•    introduction to INTBAU and the work programme;
•    health and safety rules;
•    tools, conservation and restoration;
•    structures & materials;
•    lecture & practical: lime mortar for stonework, brickwork and plaster;
•    lecture & practical: mixing lime mortars & additives;
•    lecture & practical: cutting out defective mortar from stone and brickwork;
•    lime pointing and dubbing out stonework and brickwork;
•    case studies of work carried out in England and Romania; and
•    question and answer sessions.

REGISTRATION
