Introduction

The International Network for Traditional Building, Architecture & Urbanism and NGO Sighisoara Durabila (Sustainable Sighisoara) are delighted to announce a one week intensive charrette on urban planning.   The event will take place as part of the gradost::08 - the east-west urban planning festival. gradost::08 is a three weeks urban planning cultural event held in Sighisoara, a medieval town located in Transylvania and included on UNESCO Heritage List. The aim of the charrette is to produce a set of proposals for the protection and sustainable development/management of the protected Old Town (Citadel and Lower Town) to be possibly included in the future local protection plan (P.U.Z.).

Sighisoara is a small town of just over thirty thousands inhabitants, located in a hilly area of Transylvania, known as the Saxon area. Saxon is the local name given to German inhabitants, who settled there some 850 years ago. The local architecture employs traditional design and materials, which together create a harmonious and balanced environment.

Over the last years the pressure from investors and toursim operators grew continuously, while the heritage remains mostly neglected. Among the current projects of Sighioara are the construction of a shopping mall at the edge of the Old Town and the replacement of the old cobble stomes within the UNESCO-protected Citadel with new cubic stones, rather out of character. Local activists and NGOs argue that such initiatives could hamper the sustainable development of the city, threaten the heritage and local traditions and could even lead to the loss of the world heritage status.
