Prince's Foundation Young Designer Competition Winner Announced
The Prince's Foundation is pleased to announce team ‘Future Traditional’ as the winner of its first Young Designer’s Competition.
The design, a collaboration between Douglas Ardern, Jamie Wallace and Ruaridh Inverarity, features a pronounced double-gabled front and was inspired by traditional vernacular buildings.
All entries were considered by a panel of judges chaired by HRH, The Prince of Wales. This year’s panel also included, amongst others, property expert Kirstie Allsopp, Ellis Woodman of Building Design Magazine, as well as Prince's Foundation Chief Executive Hank Dittmar.
Hank said: “The winning design drew immediate positive response from the judging panel, and for good reason. It is a thoughtful, beautiful building that we are excited to take forward with Douglas, Jamie and Ruaridh.
“It was also exciting to see such enthusiasm in the variety and quality of designs submitted, which reinforces the idea that the Prince’s House principles of sustainability through tradition and beauty carry weight in the field”.
The winning design will become the centrepiece at next year’s Ideal Home Show, where it will showcase its credentials as an affordable, low-energy, comfortable and modern eco-home.
The design competition forms part of the Prince's Foundation's five-year partnership with Media 10, owners of the Ideal Home Show, and their joint commitment to promote the values of sustainable living.
Director of Media 10, and a member of the judging panel, Lee Newton, said: “We were extremely pleased with the response to this year’s competition. The standard of entries was very high and it was a challenging process, but we feel that ‘Future Traditional’ fits in with the Prince’s House system, whilst showing a clear vision for mass produced housing for the future.”
As well as being exhibited to thousands of Ideal Home Show visitors, the winner will also receive a £5,000 cash prize.
All entrants to the competition had to be under 40 years old, and were required to respond to an architectural design brief reflecting the our ethos of sustainability, practicality, durability, beauty and comfort in modern living.
Following the Ideal Home Show the house will be re-located to a real development site and will have the chance to join the portfolio of Prince’s House system designs, currently being licensed to developers and house builders in the UK.
