English Heritage Launches National Heritage List for England

English Heritage, the UK Government’s statutory advisor on England’s historic environment, has launched a new online database of the country’s 400,000 listed buildings, registered parks, gardens and battlefields, protected shipwrecks and scheduled monuments. The database is a very big step towards the better understanding and protection of England’s heritage, as well as towards the improved accessibility of information which was not previously readily available.

The National Heritage List for England is unprecedented in its combining of separate registers and lists for different types of heritage. Members of the public are able to search online for all manner of heritage, by location, by date, or by listing grade (I, II*, II). English Heritage launched the database at the same time as its National Heritage Protection Plan for 2011-12 to 2014-15.
