Colum Mulhern

Contact

As part of his practical training he spent one year working in an architectural practice Paris between 1980 and 1981. By the time he began Part 2 of his architectural education Colum was convinced that the use of classical and traditional architectures and urbanism was the only sustainable means of building for the future. All his work since that time, both in and out of school, has been faithful to that conviction.

Colum has been living and working in Luxembourg since 1984.

Work

Colum Mulhern began his professional career by working as the first employee of architects Hermann & Valentiny in Remerschen. In 1988 he formed a partnership with Lucien Steil in Esch-sur-Alzette, until Lucien returned to teaching architecture in 1997. During that period Mulhern & Steil were awarded prizes in a number of local and European architectural competitions including the international competition for the reconstruction of Marsham Street, London in 1996. They were also awarded the “Fondation Phillipe Rotthier“ European Award for realizations in Esch-sur-Alzette and Clemency in 1995.

Since 1997 Colum has continued to practice as an architect in Luxembourg, working also with Leon Krier from 1989 to the present day on projects in France, Germany, Holland, Portugal and the UK.
Between 2000 and 2003 he designed 7 houses, which were later built in Knokke-Heist, a new town on the Belgian coast designed by Leon Krier and Andres Duany.

Colum’s new barn building in the Luxembourgish village of Weiler-la-Tour was awarded an “Urban Infill, Award of Merit“ for Excellence in Urban Design at the CNU Awards in Buffalo, USA in June 2014.
