28 Apr The Art of Building Cities: Barri Gòtic
The Barri Gòtic is the starting point of any exploration in Barcelona. From
human-castling building in Plaça Jaume to the history-steeped backstreets
around the La Seu cathedral and the laidback, arty bars and cafes of its squares.
From the Roman Citadel to the Gotìc Barrio, Barcelona is a picturesque place,
full of street art landmarks, photogenic scenes and textures. For mouth-watering
photographs, head to the city's most central food market and gourmand's
pilgrimage La Boqueria along La Rambla, where you'll discover layers of fruit
and veg, olives and herbs in full colour.

29 Apr The traditional architecture of Spain: the Poble Espanyol
Built for the International Exposition of 1929, Poble Espanyol is a large-scale
model village celebrating architectural styles from all over Spain.
The Plaça Espanya provides the most popular access to the area and to the park
of Montjuïic; in the Avenida de la Reina Maria Cristina la Fontana Magica is
waiting to wonder you.

30 Apr The Garden city utopia and the magical landscape of Park Guell
Park Güell is a magical place that emulates an English
garden city. After seeing the gatehouses, based on designs for the opera Hansel
and Gretel, you can walk up a splendid staircase, past a mosaic lizard to what
once was a marketplace.

Gaudí's fairytale architectures: the Sagrada Familia a breathtaking and
grotesque giant where the protuberances create a stone tapestry of Christ's life.

1 May The contemporary Raval
Like Paris, Barcelona has a literary flavour. In this city, many writers have been
inspired by the lower Raval, generally referred to as the Barrio Chino. Major
contemporary key buildings are MACBA Barcelona's Contemporary Art
Museum located opposite the Barcelona's Contemporary Cultural Centre.

The Catalan Modernisme: la manzana de la discordia
PM (12:30) In the Passeig de la Gràcia, there are some masterpieces: Gaudí's Casa Batlló,
built for textile tycoon and La Pedrera (09:00 20:00) that hosts the Espai Gaudì.
Nearby, you can gaze at his rivals' architecture: the shiny Casa Amatller by Puig
i Cadafalch, and the Casa Lleó Morera by Domènech i Muntaner. Nearby, you'll
find his Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, whose city gardens offer a pleasant
oasis amid the bustling city.

2 May The extension of Modern Barcelona: the Dreta area of Eixample
Eixample, the modern city extension designed by Ildefons Cerdà, walking along
Passeig de la Gràcia and study a template of urban boulevard, an introduction to
the Catalan Modernisme.

3 May Olimpic Games: the Montjuic international styles
Montjuïic is perfect for a leafy stroll with great views; scattered across the
landward side are buildings from the 1992 Olympic Games, including Santiago
Calatrava's Olympic needle, the lighthouse, a vast cemetery, the Olympic stadium
and the Jardi Botànic. Here It is located the Pavelló de la Repubblica by Mies
van der Rohe (1929) and the cultural centre CaixaForum.

Barcelona at the Pompeu Fabra University - Campus del Mar Residence Hall,
organization fees, educational activities in English and Italian, a tourbook, a welcome kit,

DRAWING THE GENIUS PROGRAMME. Como, 2012
International Summer School - Politecnico di Milano
Drawing the Genius 3D Mapping, ICT & Design for Places - Como July 17-27
Students, graduated, practitioners, companies employees and everybody who wants to learn about technologies and tools for positioning and 3D mapping in the field on Architecture, Design and Environment are invited to apply to the International Summer School Drawing the Genius 3D Mapping, ICT & Design for Places, Como (Italy) from 17th to 27th of july 2012.
The summer school is organized by the Politecnico di Milano School of Design and partnered by: Columbia University New York, Universidad CEU San Pablo Madrid and Topcon Positioning Inc, leader for positioning, automation and infomobility developing high technology tools for 3D mapping and Google’s Street View system.
Deadline for applications: June 10, 2012.
Digital technologies provide important tools for documentation, analysis, and design innovation. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are also critical to improve the competitiveness of European craft and creative industries and to meet the demands of its society and economy. ICTs have a catalytic impact on culture and creative industries in three key areas: productivity and innovation by facilitating creativity and management; modernization of public services through advances in science and technology; and supporting cooperation by facilitating access to cultural and information.
The workshop will follow the Strategic Design workflow: first survey and documentation; second, representation and interpretation; third innovation and design. Techniques will range from traditional drawing to digital information technologies. Digital techniques like mobile mapping, indoor positioning and infomobility will be utilized along with cultural mapping, visual mapping, and spatial visualization of data and Smart Cities. Design for adapting and integrating cultural heritage and place identity for contemporary needs, aspirations, functions, and meanings.
During the Summer School It will be presented the 3D mobile mapping survey of the Como Lake waterfront, the Km della Conoscenza path, a special partnership between Politecnico di Milano and Topcon.

BARCELONA PROGRAMME 2012

It is a programme that provided the unique opportunity to investigate the ideas that have most profoundly shaped the cities of Europe and are likely to powerfully shape the cities of the future. Barcelona offers an abundance of object lessons through its heritage of Art, Design and Architecture illustrating both the promise and the challenges of constructing a sustainable city for the future emboding the richness of spanish social life. The mission is to make that as yet “invisible” city visible by means of the visual language of drawing and representation and allowing our imagination to be free.

The course objectives:
_to have a strong understanding of Barcelona’s diverse history, culture, traditions, art, planning initiatives, and architectural practices;
_to be able to perform architectural and urban design technical sketching from observation to more formal layouts;
_to gain immense knowledge on the famous architects and masterplanners, such as Antoni Gaudì (the Sagrada Familia, Casa La Pedrera, Park Guell, etc) and Ildefons Cerdà (the Exaimple town extension);
_to learn about innovative environmental practices that originate in Barcelona;
_to be exposed to heritage regeneration, methods for intensification, and how to build active social coesion through environmental design.
