John Smylie is an Irish architect, partner with WDR & RT Taggart, a multi-disciplinary practice with offices in Belfast, Londonderry and Dublin. WorkJohn Smylie's work offers traditional architectural design as the preferred approach to new development, in particular within the context of the built environment of Northern Ireland, which has suffered the long-term effects of civil conflict and urban decline. He specialises in larger scale, mixed-use urban projects, working with the Province's leading developers and urban regenaration specialists. Recent commissions extend to the North of England and Scotland. Mr. Smylie's approach to design draws inspiration from the regional vernacular-whether it is Ulster's or Cumbria's simple, stripped Classical forms or Belfast's or Glasgow's ornate Victorian terraces. The practice's building conservation work provides an important contribution to Northern Ireland's significant but diminishing listed stock. His work in the field of urban design has recently resulted in being selected to produce a design for a large-scale urban infill with public piazza within the setting of one of Belfast's most prestigious buildings, St. Anne's Cathedral. Other current schemes include the design of a major new retail, leisure and residential development as part of the town centre regeneration of Bangor, Co. Down. John Smylie's recent project for a retail/office and residential development in Lisburn incorporating a new public piazza won acclaim from the Civic Trust as well as his current design for a major retail development within the Belfast City Centre Conservation Area.
