Franck Lohsen McCrery & Alexander Stoddart proposal for reconstruction in traditional Manhattan style

WTC laser reconstruction

A proposal for the reconstruction of the area of lower Manhattan destroyed in the 11 September attacks, designed by Washington DC and New York based FLM Architects with Scottish sculptor and ICTP member Sandy Stoddart, was revealed at a New York City Journal public meeting late last year.   The scheme (right) proposes an intricately restitution of traditional Manhattan scale, with a collection of mid-rise towers culminating in a new landmark building.

A network of streets at ground level - removed in the 1970s to build the unloved raised plaza in which the Twin Towers stood - forms the basis of the design.   Buildings of various heights are arranged around a formal central memorial square featuring Stoddart's monumental statuary to the memory of firefighters and police officers killed in the attack.   The scheme attracted favourable comment from many sources, particularly for its intelligent and convincing re-establishment of a connected ground level street grid.
