Conservation of Architectural Ironwork CPD Courses

The National Heritage Ironwork Group (NHIG) has announced a series of two-day courses in the conservation of ironwork. Delegates will learn the basic principles of assessing historic ironwork in situ and making decisions about its care. The courses will include an introduction to heritage ironwork and historic context; metallurgy of wrought iron and steels; and traditional tools, techniques, materials, design, and manufacture. The focus will be on fixings; working with iron and steel; the processes of restoration; surface preparation and treatments; specification and standards for heritage ironwork; contracts; procurement; and pricing. The courses will also include a site visit to survey historic ironwork and develop a strategy for its conservation.

Lecturers for the courses are Geoff Wallis and Chris Topp, both of whom are craftspeople and acknowledged experts in the field of historic ironwork conservation.
