Nexus 2012, the 9th edition of the International Conference Nexus: Relationship between Architecture and Mathematics, to take place in Milan 11-14 June 2012, will include the Nexus 2012 PhD Day. This will consist of a workshop especially dedicated to PhD students, scheduled for the final day of the meeting on 14 June 2012.
This event is sponsored by the Politecnico PhD School and the Design PhD programme of the INDACO department and by the Italian National PhD School in “Science of Representation and Architectural Survey”.
Purpose
The Nexus PhD Day is intended to be an international and multi-disciplinary meeting between PhD students involved in scientific research regarding architecture and mathematics. The aim is to promote exchanges and interaction among students in various schools from different countries.
The PhD Day will consist of: discussions of posters and comments by members of the scientific committee; brief oral presentations by selected authors; and a round table with public discussion of selected papers at all the different scales of design, from landscape to urban planning, to architecture, applied arts and industrial design. This will provide an opportunity for PhD candidates and those who have received a PhD within the past two years to present their work to a large international academic community, by either a brief oral presentation and/or by a poster.
In parallel to the poster session of the Conference, another special poster session will be specifically dedicated to the presentation of PhD theses and PhD research in progress. Papers selected for oral presentation, posters and abstracts will be published and distributed to the participants of the conference.
Italian PhD Schools in “Science of Representation and Architectural Survey” will recognise credits (CFU) for participants whose work is selected or accepted.
General Topics
Theory and Analysis of design in architecture, landscape and objects Design grammars, morphology, parametrical transformation Complex shapes and structures in architecture and industrial design Harmony and Architecture (music and proportions) The digital ‘lecture’: a synthesis of history, science and architecture The digital model: innovative methods of survey and representation real-world data shape representation: from mathematics to visualization
Who Is Eligible
PhD students, alone or in a research group (without senior scholars) Those who have earned a PhD within the last two years (2010 and later), alone or in a research group (without senior scholars) Those eligible to participate in the PhD day who submitted abstracts during the Call for Papers for Nexus 2012 that were not accepted are encouraged to re-submit for the PhD Day.
Qualifying participants for the PhD day are eligible to pay a reduced conference fee.
What To Submit
PhD students are asked to prepare both a poster and paper of their research (no more than 10,000 characters/1600 words with a short abstract of 200/400 words.
