The Place of Dwelling by Ray Gindroz

Leon Krier speaking

Internationally renowned architect and urban designer, Ray Gindroz of Urban Design Associates, writes new book to mark The Prince's Foundation's 10th Anniversary

Renowned architect and urban designer, Ray Gindroz has published a new book entitled "The Place of Dwelling" to mark the 10th anniversary of The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment, the sister charity of INTBAU.
Right: Ray Gindroz.

It is the second of a series of books, each to be written by 'giants' of traditional urban design, that will contribute to The Prince's Foundation's academic capital. Illustrated with many water colours, plans and photgraphs, the book is a compact and easy to read 35-page treatise on Gindroz's design philosophy and will be a useful additionto any library.

Dwellings play many roles in our lives, in the life of our community and in the process of city building. Each role adds depth, dimension and nuance to our understanding of the 'place' of dwelling in our lives and in civil society.

First and foremost, dwellings are the physical place in which we reside and in their form, shape, condition and stature have considerable impact on our lives and our sense of self. Next, dwellings and their design play a role in the stability and life of our immediate neighbourhoods, influencing the way in which we interact with one another and the type of community we create in that place. Finally, the design and construction of dwellings are an inherent part of the process of city building, the broader canvas on which our lives revolve and evolve.

These aspects are discussed in the book using photographs of existing places and drawings of proposed developments. Each of the three aspects is introduced with a drawing by the architectural illustrator David Csont. Hist drawings focus on people using the spaces, reminding us that residents of dwellings, neighbourhoods and cities must be the focus of our attention as we built.

Absolutely fabulous and a great read—I highly recommend it!!
