Laslea Masonry Course Transylvania, Romania 12 - 18 May 2008 INTBAU Masonry Course in Rosia Montana Image of Rosia Montana by Lorin Niculae

SOLD OUT - ENQUIRE NOW ABOUT 2009

INTBAU Romania is delighted to announce a new Masonry Course in Transylvania - Romania.   The course will take place in one of the oldest European communities - the Rosia Montana village.   The place was settled by the Romans at the beginning of the Christian era.   The legend says that the Roman emperors were attracted by the gold resources of Rosia Montana and decided to conquer the place.

Rosia Montana is formed of traditional houses, many of which are listed buildings.   The area has an enormous amount of heritage, including archaeological sites of unique value - such as pre-Roman and Roman galleries.

Masonry Course

The Masonry course to be organised by INTBAU Romania is designed as a hands-on project which aims to restore a traditional house in Rosia Montana while providing training for the local people and a number of students / apprentices who are keen to learn traditional restoration skills. The tutor of the course is the British Master craftsman, Henry Rumbold, who was awarded an MBE in 2007 for his restoration work over the last 40 years.

The site chosen for the course is house number 391 on Brazi Street. The house is representative of the entire area and it is built of traditional materials, such as lime, stone and timber. At present 391 house of Rosia Montana has a number of structural problems, many wall fractures and roof problems. The main objective of the course is to fix the structural problems of the house.

The INTBAU Masonry Course is organised with the help of the Soros Foundation Romania, to whom we are very grateful.

    How to get there?

Romania is easily accessible, served by buses, trains and planes galore.

There are plenty of direct flights to Romania from European countries, and, with a single plane change, from a great many more. Most flights arrive at the capital Bucharest's two airports (Otopeni & Traian Vuia). The nearest major city to Rosia Montana is Alba Iulia and the nearest international airports are Cluj-Napoca, Targu Mures and Sibiu.

Romania has an unbeatable train service linking Romania to Western Europe and Russia, which comfortable and rather cheap. There are plenty of trains from western Europe, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Moldova, Ukraine and beyond. The website address of the Romanian National Rail Company is www.cfr.ro

A train journey from Bucharest - the Romanian capital - to Alba Iulia normally takes up to six and a half hours if you are not taking the slowest type of trains called PERSONAL. We strongly advise you not to take personal trains as they are really slow.
