This publication builds on the contributions from the international group of architects, planners, educationists & decision makers who presented papers at the International Conference for "New Architecture & Urbanism: Development of Indian Traditions", held in Delhi in January 2007 by INTBAU India with the support of the Nabha Foundation.

The publication looks at what defines traditional methods, their relevance to the contemporary context and examines important case-studies. It also offers the evolving small towns and cities as possible exemplars for appropriate and sustainable development through various case studies including that in the states of Punjab, Karnataka, Rajasthan, UK, the US and many other situations.

It presents the arguments, axioms and case studies epitomising the contemporary utility of tradition in New Architecture & Urbanism within the following thematic areas:

    New Architecture & Urbanism examines "New Ways of Looking at Heritage", by separating it from pure history into a living and evolving process. The book looks at what defines traditional methods and their relevance to the contemporary context. It also examines aspects of "Continuity and Contextual Frameworks" in the built environment. The section on "Sustainable Buildings, Places and Communities" explores the many facets of locally driven processes from the viewpoint of tradition and sustainability.
